Obscurities

Big Ed (of HRV fame) recently sent this photo of a cone lounging around the English countryside. Isn't it lovely?!?

Big Ed's email, for whatever reason, focused on the sundry other background materials. I think that, for the historians out there, it is an amazing lesson as to what can be learned from a single image.

These are some quotes from Big Ed's scholarship -

It is the church seen at the end of that alternate Arnold Layne video.

But it isn't in Holland.

It seems the rumours were true. The boys did film this video in England in Morning of 29Apr67;then travelled to Amsterdam for outdoor photos in the Afternoon; then went on to the studio forthe "Fan Club" appearance that night; then travelled back to London very late that night; thenappeared at the Ally Pally at dawn the next day.

Quite a busy 24 hours. It's good to finally pin down this enigma. The only question I have leftis the mode of transportation. Did they fly or take the ferry?

Considering the time it would take to drive from Highgate to the ferry terminal (at Harwich) and the slowspeed the ferry (8 hour trip), there's no way the band took the ferry, they had to have flown. But photographs of the band playing at Fan Club and at the Ally Pally both show them using theirown equipment. I can't imagine the cost of putting Rick's Farfisa on an airplane!

Thus, the only logical explanation is that the four of them flew whilst Peter Wynne-Wilsonbrought all their equipment over on the ferry. Thus the photos of them larking about Amsterdamduring the afternoon - was really just them waiting for Peter to arrive.

Anyway...The church is called St. Michael's.

It's on South Grove Street in Highgate - a short walk fromMike Leonard's house. The park/pond is just another short walk from there at Hampstead Heath.

well, the Camden one's handy if you want a prawn and mayonnaise sandwich on top of your spiritual nourishment, I suppose...
