There's a couple bootlegs of this show out there.. "Genesis in Basel," and, "The Musical Fox." They didn't play in Basel, Switzerland in Jan 1972 (according to the genesis tours database), but they did play in Arlon, Belgium on January 16 1972. This date and Venue is currently the most popular date for this, Genesis' 2nd oldest known live concert recording.
Back before the was a Highland Bootleg Co., there were tape traders. I was one of em. I dug this tape out of my closet, dusted it off, played it, compared it to my afforementioned bootlegs, and thought, gee, this ain't half bad! I don't even remember getting it in trade... I'm so forgetful.
So anyhoo, I transferred it to my hard drive.. It's probably a 2nd or 3rd gen copy from the master - its pretty clear. The Azimuth isn't perfect - that problem stems from an earlier dupe, though I did adjust my tape deck for optimum clarity. I think it blows the boots away, but i'm biased! lol....
I did experiments with EQ and NR and stuff... I only saved the work I did with EQ of the Lower-end frequencies, About a whole tone of pitch correction, and a slight punch up of the keyboard areas. I tried hiss/noise reduction - i did not like the result. I generally don't like Hiss and NR in general, I'd much rather hear the hiss if it encompases the ambience of the instruments (cymbals and vocals and quieter guitar bits) and the ambience of the venue. This slight hiss does just that.
Whatever, I mean it sounds to me a far cry better than the afforementioned bootlegs...
I agree with Eeklair. There are times when noise reduction can do more harm than good to a recording. This is a wonderful recording.. minor fluctuations and all.
