7-8/10 (very good to very good plus, IMHO as always) I strongly believe that this is the ENTIRE concert. I could be wrong.....
CD 1 : 4 tracks, 45:10 CD 2 : 8 tracks, 44:46 TT : 89:56
I was not at this show and I did not record it, so this will be relatively short and sweet. I got this show in a trade at least 15 years ago if not earlier than that. My source did not know if it was from bootleg vinyl, reel to reel tape or what. There are MANY questions surrounding the origins of this recording. Perhaps somebody in the Dime community can supply the answers. I surely do NOT have them. As you can see, the show is basically 90 minutes long. When I saw ELP play at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, PA on August ??, 1972, this is about how long they played, I believe. The SQ of this recording is very good, especially considering the technology available at that time. There is a mild amount of hiss present as well as a little bit of very occasional warble in some piano and guitar parts. None of these is cause for undue alarm. There is NO audience chatter present ; the audience was very respectful of the band and each other. At the beginning of the first track, a woman (?) says, "Jim"...that's about it ! When listened to on headphones, the recording reveals a few vinyl pops and crackles in certain areas. This did not strike me as wide- spread. When searching the Internet for answers, I came across a bootleg record called "Essential - Transit Auditorium, Chicago, IL 8/25/71". This is the wrong date and the record was only 73 minutes long. The cassette that I own says "ELP Chicago 8/21/71". That's it. The more questions I try to answer, the more questions I uncover. Even the venue and date is uncertain. One thing that is certain is that the performance is dynamic. Tarkus had just been released in June 1971 and the band plays a number of cuts from the album to the delight of the audience. It's truly a wonderful show. If I have mistakenly misnamed any songs, please post corrections ; the only one that I'm unsure of is Rondo '69.
That's about all that I have to say, so let's wrap this up. No buy, no sell, no mp3. Please seed this as long as you can. I will post a sample or two shortly for those of you still undecided but I think you'll find that this is a really good-sounding tape considering the time period and a welcome addition to any ELP fan's collection. Well, thanks for reading this and Mr. Natural would like to add these few comments: have fun, don't freak out and by all means, enjoy the concert!!!
