Thanks Dr. Forrester! The Pierre Moerlen's Gong show with Holdsworth sounds like either a hissy soundboard or hissy radio broadcast--not an audience recording, with it's excellent stereo separation! Unfortunately, the speed is quite slow on this so i think this is maybe a multi-gen. tape dub(?). Still very good music and quite rare live material indeed!!!
Just had another listen to the Holdsworth show, and maybe it is just an audience recording--if so, a good one--except for the slow speed issue.
maybe it's one of those mics on the stage recordings done by the band since it does have very good stereo separation--which is usually quite rare for strictly audience recordings!?!
Thank you for posting some Gong shows I have never heard before. The 1973 show has a great line-up, but for me the sound quality was borderline unlistenable.
The 1976 show with Holdsworth is very nice, especially after the first 45 seconds of track 2, after which the right channel problems subside. I agree that it sounds like stereo microphones on stage.
The 1974 show is really great (musically speaking) and sounds like a B+ quality audience tape, possibly mics on or close to the stage, stereo, marred by a few cuts. The line-up is Daevid Allen, Didier Malherbe, Tim Blake, Steve Hillage, Mike Howlett, Miquette Giraudy and Laurie Allan.
The 1974 show captures Gong near or at its peak - a much different band and sound than the 1976 version. I strongly urge listeners to load their pipe or vape with their favorite herbal blend and take the Wayback machine to 1974.
Hi, mahavishnu floyd, i'm the anon who wrote the comments in the beginning about the '76 show W. Holdsworth.
Thanks for the recommendation on the '74 show: pretty good sounding audience tape, i would give it a 'B'soundwise. Unfortunately i have no herbal blend to enjoy it with! :(
To Dr. Forrester: i'm surprised you didn't include the excellent Gong soundboard recording (with Bill Bruford on drums!) from Chateau-Neuf, Oslo, Norway, Dec. 15, 1974 with these other Gong shows. That is my favorite unofficial live Gong recording: very good sound, and BB offers up a nice helping of *musical tightness* which adds a lot to the table, though some might not agree that his 'professionalism' is a bonus to the Gong sound! ;)
I didn't share that recording because I do not have it. If you upload it somewhere, I would happily create a post for your link. That way, everyone can enjoy it. Of course, I would give you credit for your help!
Hello Dr. Forrester, here is the link to flac files of the Gong sdb. with Bill Bruford, 1974. Since this is a link to someone else's blog, you do not have to print this comment for others to see--unless you don't mind!!!
