Dream Divers - In My Infant Air

An entire CD of Barrett covers. Quite nice really. They even do a lengthy reworking of Jugband Blues - something not often attempted.

The Ancestors - Brigadoon

This is another album that is the very definition of obscure. It was just on the cusp of being released when the music label and distribution company both collapsed (in 1994). The CDs were never sold in stores. Apparently, a few have filtered out here & there under mysterious circumstances. But, it was never available to the general public in the traditional manner of these things.

Song number 6 is called "Syd" - and, yes, it's about *that* Syd. It's not a cover song, rather a very nice tribute. The overall feel of this album is dark, moody, and heavy. There's loads of Moog synthesizer and fuzzed out guitar. In short, it falls directly into the "Progressive Rock" catagory - PROG.

Song number 12 is called "Helo" - and it's a much happier song. It's the sort of thing that, even after many, many listenings, continues to just elude me. There's clearly a story being told. I just want to sit down with the author (Joziah) and say, "OK, right, what the hell is this about, exactly ?"

You'll find quite a few empty tracks on the end... I didn't put them there by mistake. That's how my CD is, so that's how I am sharing it with you. I'm just as baffled as you will be. Don't be too hasty when deleting them, though.. There is something there towards the end that you'll want to keep.

I've got another Floyd DVD coming in about 2 days time. Until then, download this one, find somewhere dark & warm that you can spend some time & give this CD a listen. I think that you'll be glad that you did.

Mind Your Throats Please - final edition

This is another of those sordid tales... Many people were involved. Lots of money changed hands. Everyone had high hopes. But, in the end, I think everyone was disappointed - at least a little. Now... I am not going to go into the whole unpleasant affair. But, it is important to tell you at least a little of the story..

The creation of this DVD was a group effort. To keep everyone up to date with the various tweaking that was being done, rough draft copies were being mailed around, viewed, and improved upon.

When it came time to send the final edition to the duplication facility, a rough draft was accidently sent instead. To make matters worse, the duplication facility made an additional mistake - pressing the wrong master entirely to about half of the disks. So, if you were lucky, you got a rough draft of the Floyd material. If you weren't lucky, you got non-Floyd material.

Then... the troubles, which I won't go into, really got started. The upshot of all of the unpleasantness was that the final edition just got ... buried & forgotten.

Forgotten ... until now. I am very pleased to be able to share with you the DVD that was Supposed To Be. If you bought the original, if you got a digital clone, if you've never even heard about this project before today... This edition is one that you should own. (Please see the cover art for content details.)

Moving Soundtracks (Volume 1)

This one is just about as obscure as they come... This CD was issued back in 1991 in Belgium. Among other silliness, it features a cover of an unreleased Pink Floyd song. I first shared this song back here. But, that version was a pretty poor quality .mp3. For the first time, I am able to share the complete album in lossless. This comes to us thanks to our friend in Belgium, who has been searching for a copy for us for months. Hope you like it!!

This a wonderful album containing many covers, including The Gnome. Further details here.

REM - Non-Album Tracks

Back in the heady days of CD singles, bands used to put the big single out as the "A-side" and loads of non-album tracks as the "B-sides" - I think just to give the serious fan a reason to buy the thing. Of course, singles just don't stay in print very long. They quickly become something of a rarity. REM was a singles-intensive band for ages, so they have an unusually large non-album track catalog floating around out there... I bought this CD because it contains 2 cover songs that I adore. REM covered Syd Barrett's "Dark Globe" and Robyn Hitchcock's "Arms Of Love".

Syd Barrett Tribute - Eternal Diamond

I thought it might be nice to do some cover songs & tributes for a little while... This is a very nice compilation of Barrett cover songs made shortly after his departure.

Kate Bush - Aerial Radio Shows

Kate Bush only did one or two interviews to promote Aerial, her most recent album. The BBC did their best to make the most of them. There were 3 special radio shows that I know about. I captured the internet streams from the BBC website.

7-Nov-05 - Mark Radcliffe - 1030 pm BBC Radio 2

New Syd Barrett Interview

Did you guys know that there is a new Barrett interview available for one dollar? How cool is that? Imagine how much this guy might've gotten for his tape on eBay. Instead, he's sharing for next to nothing.

Grab it, listen to it, and try to decide whom is the highest - the interviewer or interviewee.

More Julee

I updated the previous post, FYI. There is all manner of Julee related weirdness available there. I've got some groovy Floydian material brewing up now. Give it a day or so & you'll be swimming around.

Although it probably goes without saying, I created the Julee CDs more or less at random, as things filtered in. If you want to rearrange in some other, perhaps more pleasing or sensible way - have at it. In fact, if you do any substantial rebuilding, do us a favor and leave a comment with links & I'll update these posts or create a new one for you.

Julee Cruise - Rarities

Julee Cruise was featured on the Twin Peaks soundtrack album as well as two other solo albums made by the same team. Several years later, she put out a truly solo album - completely different from her work with the Twin Peaks folks. It (and her web site) vanished almost immediately. All along, she has made guest appearances on loads of albums. Most of these are really nice. Sadly, much of her work is available only on promotional CDs and LPs - some is completely unreleased. I spent a fortune on eBay & put together a series of Rarities compilations for my own amusement.

Kate Bush - This Woman's Live Work

I have quite a few live Kate Bush CDs. Unfortunately, they are all the same show - the Hammersmith Odeon show. The reason for this, as far as I can make out, is that it's fairly available and of good quality. Digging through the closet, I happened to come across this collection of various live pieces - mostly one-off appearances sitting in with her friends.

Kate Bush - Limited Edition Interview Picture Disc

Here are a few other interviews you may not have heard before...

More here and here.

Kate Bush - Shrubberies

Another CD of early Kate Bush demos... A friend of mine (many years ago) gushed over this CD, telling me that I absolutely *had* to buy it if I ever found a copy. It cost a bit more than I really should've spent, but I haven't regretted it.

Kate Bush - Alone At My Piano

This CD has a story behind it... Back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, I used to buy exotic CDs from a mail-order place in Germany. Now, they didn't actually manufacture anything. They just tried to act as a wholesaler for all of the smaller independent labels that were around at the time. The catalog from the German company, therefore, wasn't their own. They didn't actually stock any CDs. They just told you what they *should* be able to get from their suppliers. It turned out, of course, that their suppliers were notoriously unstable organizations.
Soooooo.... I never actually received any of the CDs that I ordered from the Germans. They just sent me piles of whatever they happened to have on hand. Under normal circumstances, that might make for an unhappy customer. But, I loved getting the box of surprises every few months.

One of the CDs that fell from The Great Beyond was this Kate Bush number. The liner notes list a manufacturer's postal address in the United States. I wrote to it all those many years ago (asking for a catalog) only to have my inquiry returned bearing a large "Invalid Address" stamp.

A Kate Bush collector once offered me $200 for this disk. I have never seen a copy for sale anywhere. I have never seen any other titles by this same record label.

The contents of the CD, I am sure, are probably readily available in these heady days of torrents and such. It's not really the music that makes me smile whenever I happen across this title - it's remembering what a beautiful surprise it was opening that box back nearly 20 years ago.

PS: Anyone with any further information would be very welcome to leave it in the comments...

Colours Of Infinity

This DVD just came out in 2007 - and has already disappeared. It's one of the nicer archival DVDs to have come out in a long time. It's even got a nice long film featuring the soundtrack music with no narration over the top. Very vital to the Gilmour collectors out there. How sad that it is out-of-print.

Another Interstellar

In previous entries, I shared a film set to Interstellar Overdrive that was created by Anthony Stern. This is a brilliant film. If you've never seen it - you should. Another previous Interstellar was a promotional film from Snapper - probably promoting the DVD release of the London '66-'67 film.

Today, we have yet another film that uses IO as the soundtrack. As with the others, it features scenes from London and little bits of the Floyd at UFO. This one is black & white - and asks lots of questions of the audience.

Limited Edition Interview Disc - CSK 6060

Probably the rarest of all of the Pink Floyd promotional CDs. Certainly, it's the most interesting one I have ever come across in terms of content. This one features the answers to questions. I believe the idea was for local DJs to "pretend" to be interviewing the Floyd members by reading the questions themselves, then playing the pre-recorded answers.

Although Gilmour, of course, gets the most questions, we do get a number of answers from Nick & Rick. This is good stuff, if a little formal.

I've left off the two "official" tracks - because I assume that everyone out there has a copy of The Division Bell by now. If you don't, do us all a favor and go buy one. It's a jolly nice album - well worth the trouble.

Pink Floyd - Promotional tapes

This is probably the first DVD that I ever put together. I spent a fortune on eBay buying promotional video tapes and wanted to compile them & share them with my friends. The gem in the collection is the interview of Roger Waters. It was made for "Is Anybody Out There", the live Wall concert. It was originally going to be issued by Capitol, who did the interview. But, it ended up being issued by Columbia. So, Capitol just shelved the interview & it was never used for anything. It's a great interview & really deserves to be seen.

I did not create the art. The contents of this DVD were used for some VCDs and someone else did make some DVD art (above). I have no idea who did that. (Thanks, though!) I included some scans of a few of the original promo VHS tapes that went into making this DVD, just in case you're curious.

It seems as though all of my Pink Floyd friends also really get into the work of David Lynch, the director of many beautiful films. He is probably best known for his work on Twin Peaks.

Julee Cruise is the singer whose angelic voice gave the Twin Peaks soundtrack the ethereal weirdness.

There were many TV interviews and VH1 programs and the like that were made at the time which have just been lost to history....

Art & The 60s

This is a very, very highly recommended documentary. It fills in a lot of history of The Underground Scene that is typically not reported in other documentaries. For example, we learn loads of great stuff about the Indica Gallery and various artists that have shows there. I should warn you, however, that some of the "art" is... very ugly and should not be viewed by young people, old people, people with gentle constitutions, or, well, anybody else. The chapter is called "Skip This Bit" - and you almost certainly should. The rest is absolutely aces!!

The Art Of Tripping - Rev A

Here is another of Storm Thorgerson's documentaries. In it, he tries to answer another intractable question. Do mind-altering drugs help or hinder the artistic process? There are those who would say that drugs provide inspiration or allow different types of thought. But, others may suggest that drugs do all sorts of things (depending upon the drug) - mood swings, addiction, severe alteration of thought, which would prevent (or at least slow down) the artistic process. Mr. Thorgerson interviews loads of artists and historians and biographers to try to get the best possible answer. This is a 2 part documentary. The first part covers all of history up to about 1955. The second part covers 1955-1994. Read more here. David Gilmour provides soundtrack music.
