Disc 5

"Sound Opinions," WXRT-FM, Chicago
January 3, 2001 Length: 78:52 (condensed from a 2-hour program)

Radio show / discussion devoted to Syd Barrett: A retrospective of his career, tracing his influence on Pink Floyd through all eras of the band's history. To our knowledge, the first-ever radio program -- on commercial American airwaves, anyway -- devoted solely to Syd (and Pink Floyd in relation to Syd).

Hosted by Jim DeRogatis (author of "Kaleidoscope Eyes," the definitive history of psychedelic rock from 1960s through 1990s, and "Let It Blurt," pioneering biography of Lester Bangs), and Greg Kot. Includes previously-unheard interviews with Gilmour and Mason.

Syd / Pink Floyd OOPS (Out Of Phase Stereo) Mixes- These are fan-created remixes. These are NOT session outtakes. OOPS is a process by which a home user can remix a stereo track, thus revealing musical details that were less evident in the commercial mix. Depending on how the original track was put together, the differences may be subtle or dramatic, varying from song to song and in different parts of the song.

To better understand the OOPS effect, go here:
http://www.beatletracks.com/btoops.html

and then here:
http://www.beatletracks.com/btoops2.html

This CD consists of nearly every available stereo Pink Floyd track Syd is either on or ever been rumored to be on. We left off "See Saw" and "Jugband Blues" because they wouldn't hold up to repeated listening. ("Jugband" whispers for most of the track, except for some of the Salvation Army band when the volume spikes. "See Saw" fades in and out with vocal and mellotron.)

This is the best of the Barrett solo material, as rendered into out-of-phase More tracks could be included, but the OOPS process didn't yield a particularly interesting mix, and considerations of space won out.

It goes without saying that acoustic songs could not be used. With nothing to work with beyond a guitar and a vocal, OOPS is beside the point. By necessity, this disc features Syd with a band, or at least some overdubs.

(CDs 9-10 feature a few single-channel mixes left over from CD8, noted as such. These are not OOPS mixes, but feature one channel of the original panned to stereo. A few of these tracks are good enough to stand alone as such, and so we present them this way.)

Every OOPS and mono track in HYGIY 8-10 has been rendered as a dual-signal expansion: one channel is a mirror image of the other. For the listener, this means a richer soundfield and a more natural ambience than could be expected from pure mono, yet without any obvious attempt at a stereo result from a mono source.

NB--Most of these are credited to Syd or Pink Floyd, although
if they were REALLY Syd or PF they wouldn't be here. Common
sense dictated it was easier to list them as you see them than
to put quotation marks around every other word. When in doubt,
consult the Liner Notes--SHN copies of this disc come with nine
pages of twisted tales, explanations and debunkings.

Then there is the "grey area" material. A few are legitimate
Syd/PF tracks that have been compromised in one way or another.
Also, the Took tracks -- we have no way to know if Syd is on
those. We have no way to know he isn't either, so here they are.

Grateful Dead - Time & Again

Back when MSNBC first came onto the air, it wasn't a third tier CNN clone. No, it featured such programs as Time & Again - which was focused on various historical events - and was largely drawn on the interviews recorded for previous NBC programs (such as their morning news shows, etc.) They broadcast three different shows (which overlapped largely, of course) on the general subject of the Grateful Dead.

This is a compilation I made back in 2005. Most clips are from a show that used to be broadcast live on Saturday nights.

Industrial Symphony #1

The film that really launched David L ynch's career. Oh, of course, there were earlier ones. But, this is the one that really heated things up. Sadly, the LD release was terribly limited - and a DVD release has never happened. Check out the Easter Egg on this one - you won't find that weirdness anywhere else...

Happy Almost-Anniversary!

It's nearly been a year now since Dave 2.0 over at Quality Boots first really convinced me that it was, indeed, possible to share things in lossless quality on a blog. To be honest, I'd always thought that blogging was one of those inherent evils in life - like cell phones. But, I didn't understand that, really, a blog is a do-it-yourself web page... Like a sewer, what you get out of it depends upon what you put into it. B-)

I don't track anything. I don't know how many visitors I get, where they link in from, or any of the other vital statistics that other people fritter away their lives worrying over. Couldn't care less. Every now and again, I take a casual glance over the file download info at RS - trying to see what things are the most popular. Believe me - if I had more Kate Bush, I'd have already posted it. The Kate Bush fans have downloaded every Kate CD HUNDREDS of times.

Otherwise, for the typical Pink Floyd related post, there might be 10-30 downloads. (If, say, a text file is downloaded 30 times, you can almost always count on the actual content files being downloaded about half that many times. It happens every time. Not sure why.) This may seem like small-potatoes in these heady days of torrents and things. But, I am very much grounded in the days of trading cassette tapes. Doing one trade would cost a certain amount of money and take a certain amount of time. And.. that was just one trade. This is a much easier way to share with more people for less effort & at the same time, keep a certain amount of intimacy and communication.

If you want to use my links in another blog, have at it. If you want to share these files on a torrent somewhere, please, be my guest. The whole point of this exercise is to share as much as possible with anyone who may be interested. If you want to help in that effort, please do. I don't want or deserve any credit.

I have never asked for any assistance or collaborators. But, nevertheless, two nice gentlemen arrived on the scene and asked how they could be of service. They're awesome, groovy cats & we're all lucky to have them around. Tomi & Sgt Weatherman - Thanks Guys!

To all of the anonymous helpers who sometimes are able to provide cover art or background information or report errors or provide much needed psychological support - I have a big heartful of love for you all.

Right at the moment, I am doing some large-scale renaming, sorting, and backing-up of files. It'll take a few days to get things arranged properly. Please be patient with me. There's loads of good Floyd (and possible some other groups as well) coming along shortly..In the meantime, if you haven't already, please take some time to go back to the very beginning of the blog. Those posts are my personal favorites (which is why they were first). Swim around a little. Don't be shy.
