WHAT WAS DONE?


I had previously already done a version of this remaster, which hadn't been released yet,
but thought it could be better. Particularly the huge phase alignment error was only
partly corrected in my first remaster, but I thought this could be done a lot better still. Therefore, I asked TM Productions for help. Tom used the CEDAR system to correct
the phase error (which really makes a huge difference for this recording), as well as
doing a slight noise reduction.

With this new version to use, first the speed was corrected.
After an initial EQ correction, multiband compression/expansion was done. During this
process, some additional noise was once again removed. Also, the stereo image was tuned
a little.

Then some additonal EQ adjustments were done. Also, the dynamics were increased even a
little more, as this a very nice feature of this recording.

As the recording was a little harsh at this point on some of the sibilant vocals and some
of the drums, I used some slight compression on two small frequency ranges, which made the
whole a lot more listenable.

Finally the recording was sent through Ozone 3, for final touches and for normalizing
the recording to an optimum where not too much music was touched.

Remaster: The following modifications were made to this recording:

1. Channel imbalance was corrected.
2. Hiss, clicks and other tape noise were reduced.
3. High Frequency detail was enhanced once hiss was reduced.
4. Tonality was corrected.
5. Beginning and tape flip gaps were patched.
6. Tracking set using Genesis Archive 1/24/75 recording as standard -except Rael Stories.
7. Speed analysis showed no tape speed error.

Show unique features: compared to the 1/24/75 Live commercial recording, this recording has some variation in performance. Most songs performed at the standard tempo and speed with the following

Waiting room is 3 minutes longer.
Interlude is 25 seconds longer.
Silent Sorrow In Empty Boats is 15 seconds longer.
Ravine is 18 seconds longer.

Finally, the recording ends in the middle of the Story of Henry and Cynthia. This means that the song The Musical Box is missing.

Transferred from the original master soundboard tape
(open-air-microphone recording).
CEDAR Cambridge restoration, mastering and cover design by tom 2008.

The master tape was played back on a STUDER A721 three
head dual capstan professional machine (120 µs - ’normal’ setting, tape
head azimuth manually aligned), directly connected to a Prism Sound
24 bit A/D converter which fed the digital output to be recorded by the
Cedar Cambridge 5 in 24 bit 44.1 KHz onto hard drive.

This remaster used the same 24 bit source that was used for GASP 17.
Two snippets from other shows were used to fill the missing intro of the
title track and the tape-flip-gap between Lamia and Waiting Room.
