How to not impress concert security

I went to see the first two Roger Waters concerts in Chicago. During the second night, I stuck my ticket in my wallet - to keep it safe and on my person. I left my seat during the intermission. As I was returning, I saw that everyone was being asked to present their tickets before being allowed back into each given section. So, I promptly extracted my ticket from my wallet and presented it. Unfortunately, I presented them with this ticket -

The security person was ... unamused. I was totally baffled myself, to be completely honest. I had *no* idea that I had been carrying that particular item around for all this time. Eventually, after some ... conversation ... I was able to produce the appropriate item. I returned to my seat in time for the second half, which is really the only important thing. All is forgiven! Sorry for the confusion!!

Falcon Ridge Folk Festival

I have recently returned from spending a little less than a week on the road, attending the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. One of my favorite bands, Gandalf Murphy, played some five times over three days. I discovered that, despite having travelled across the country, I was by no means the most dedicated fan at the festival. I took the above photo of a fellow who, clearly, took his recordings very seriously. He is holding a chair over his camera during the rain to protect the camera. The very nice young woman seated nearby is holding an umbrella over the fan to shelter him from the rain. I have never before seen anyone use a chair as an umbrella. Naturally, I asked the obvious question. And, yes, he is an engineer.

The scenery was stunning.... when it wasn't raining.... which happened rather a lot. We were wet and covered with mud by the end of each day. Heck, a few times, we didn't even get out to a decent seat without first being covered with mud.

This is a shot taken in the "dance tent" where some people danced and some people sought shelter from the rains. I especially enjoyed the umbrella with the christmas tree lights on it.

The Hit!!!

Well, I finally got a copy of The Hit. It's out now as a "Criterion" DVD, so I thought it was as good a time as any to take the plunge. Unfortunately, as with most of the films to which the Floyd have contributed soundtrack music, this one is a real piece of crap. Oh, I know, there was that Fractal documentary that was pretty decent. TLAMLIL was a gem. The Magritte documentary wasn't at all bad. But, the others are all really pretty awful. And, true to form, this one didn't fail to spoil my evening & waste my money. The characters are all insipid, unmotivated, uninspired, and poorly written. The very worst thing that an action movie can be is boring - and believe me - this one is so boring as to actually be tedious. The Committee is an excruciatingly tedious movie. But, even it has Arthur Brown in the middle to wake the audience back up - and to let you know just who exactly is the god of hell fire. (It's Mr. Brown.) This movie has a tedious conversation near a waterfall - right in the middle of what might otherwise have been a decent chase.

As to the subject of the music... I guess any contribution by Mr. Waters is highly doubtful. This thing was released in 1984, so that fits with Mr. Clapton & Mr. Waters working together. But, the credits (above) clearly do not emphasize any contribution that Mr. Waters might've made. Even Mr. Clapton only features on 2 or 3 minutes of guitar doodling used for the opening titles. It's hardly enough to brace oneself for the tedium that is soon to follow.

My advice? Seek out a copy of "The Last Mimzy". At least it comes with the promotional film right on the DVD with the feature film. Now, that's worth spending some money.

Shutting it down.

It has been my pleasure to share live recordings and other weirdness here over the past 2 years. However, the fact is that the folks who run Rapidshare are, well, idiots. I could rant on about it, but I won't.

Just know that I regret having to make the decision to scrap this whole project. Hopefully, though, it hasn't been a complete waste. I have enjoyed these recordings - and did not make very many of them myself. That means that I have benefitted from the kindness and effort of many, many strangers. I hope that I have been able to pay that debt forward a little by sharing these goodies with you.

Shine On You Crazy Diamonds. Maybe we'll bump into each other at a Roger Waters concert. B-)

New times coming...

As you probably now, rapidshare arranged new rules - since 1st july. The impact on uploaders simple - smaller storage (i used more than 200gb, now it is restricted to 50gb). I dont care that i am not benefited for uploads (rapidpoints for downloading rapidshare files are canceled as well), but i want to provide stuff (and i want to do), we have to change system here as well:

1. No more reuploads. If you want new stuff, i cant revive old stuff because of limit mentioned above (i can have only 50gb of live links on my account, maybe it will be necessary to reduce it on 10gb)
2. imagine it as 50GB HDD, when new stuff shall coming, old stuff has to be deleted so:
we can make agreement:
a) how long shall i let the stuff uploaded (a week or two? or?)
b) how can you select what you want (for example we could let you know what stuff we donwloaded recently, or we can settle som kind of vote, etc...)

We get this stuff because someone shared it, so we would like to share it forward. So please help us to provide better services :) Any suggestions are welcomed.

This was a strange one. I went with a friend who had a professional microphone & mic stand. We got in a little bit late, had to fuss around for batteries, but got the rig together before the show started. The opening act was a bit of a downer, to be honest. But, Jill's show was great - really something special. I was very pleased with the recording. Then, I heard that someone had filmed the show and was going to release the film. Long story short, he shared four songs, but the rest was never shared. *sigh* If you look closely at the top image - you can see my friend's microphone stand. We had *no* idea that we were in the guy's shot. It's not like he ever came to say anything. I kinda feel bad about it sometimes... But, hey, he never did share his film. So, sometimes, I don't feel badly. I am going to share everything that I have from this show - the guy's 4 films and my audio recording. I'm even going to include the opening act and a review of the show I found much later. Enjoy!

This is the next time that I saw Jill play live. I'm the guy who yelled for her to play. "Money Shot". It was a song that appeared on her web site for about 2 days before it got pulled... Incredibly, she did try to play it. Probably my favorite is a song which, as far as I know, was never done anywhere else. It's never appeared on a record. It's called Girl Say Go. Fan-tastic stuff... and in amazing quality.

Jill Sobule & Deni Bonet - 1995-04-14 - Ann Arbor, MI

This show was my first introduction to three of my all-time favorite musicians... Jill Sobule, Deni Bonet, and Robyn Hitchcock. It was a wild, strange day full of all sorts of stories. You can get the Robyn Hitchcock portion of this show here.

Before the show started, I was just lounging around in the lobby area when this small blonde woman in a black dress came up and began making small talk. This, I thought, was very strange. After a few minutes, she just as suddenly turned & left. Again, I thought how very strange it was. When the show started, she walked on to the stage and began singing. It was magic!

There were two shows that night - an early show and a late show. The early show just had Jill Sobule as the opening act, but the late show had two opening acts. The second was Deni Bonet. Deni is an amazing violin player. She's still very much around & recording albums. Sadly, though, she doesn't tour outside the NYC area. This is the only live recording that I have of her. These sets are brilliant, fun, full of energy, and some of the best music that I have ever heard. I literally went into my local record shop the following Monday and ordered every album by each of these artists. (For Robyn, at least, that was a lot of albums!)

These shows weren't supposed to be shared and have remained locked away in the Secret Society's vaults for these past 15 years. Do me a favor... Download them, listen to them, and just rock the hell out. Here

Gandalf Murphy - 2008-10-18 - Ann Arbor - Pirate Ball

Concerts like this one really give me hope for mankind. They seemlessly mix the silly and the sublime. One magic moment that just jumps out at me is their cover of Eric Clapton's "Can't Find My Way Home". They invite the audience to join them in a big ship and just sail away from the world for a while. If you enjoyed their Whitehall show (below), this show is even FURTHER out there. You need a copy.

This is one of the very first shows that I filmed with a decent camera. The venue was perfect, the lighting was perfect, the crowd was perfect, and the performance shook the house. This was my daughter's first exposure to Gandalf Murphy - and she's never hesitated to go to a show since. This is one of the finest films that I have made to date.

Gandalf Murphy - 2008-10-18 - Ann Arbor

This show is a remarkable one because the set list is so completely different from typical shows. It features a medley of songs from The Wizard of Oz, a Fairport Convention cover song, and a cover of Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues done to the tune of The Who's Pinball Wizard. And... If that's not enough weirdness for you... check out the half-dozen or so sea-faring numbers. It makes me smile just knowing that there is a band out there whose members would deliberately assemble such a strange collection of things together. I went to this show & have never really been the same ever since. (I filmed the show ... but, this audio recording was made by a local taper and passed along to me in .flac format.)
