The recording: One from my lo-fi vault. Never before circulated. This has its rough spots but it's my souvenir of the show and I haven't seen an alternate recording anywhere else. If you have, let me know. I cleaned this up to arrive at the best possible transfer to digital, but I basically consider this a "raw" recording. There are "artifacts" throughout; crackly tape etc. Audience noise is moderate. Small bits missing due to tape flips, but essentially a complete show. All in all, not a bad picture of what went on.
The show: Collins, a superb prog rock drummer, had by 1981 morphed into a consummate frontman. The word "ham" comes to mind. (And yes, the Michelob commercials were not yet in the air that night). Backed by a muscular band, Collins had the audience securely in the palm of his hand. I recall the light show being impressive and tightly cued. I recently got a copy of the Buffalo show from Dec. 8--it inspired me to dust off this morsel--and the setlist was identical. (Thanks to the taper of the Dec. 8 show since it helped me get the setlist straight on this one). I always preferred the Gabriel-era Genesis, but there's no denying this band still rocked in 1981. I haven't really paid much attention to Genesis since, but I much enjoyed hearing this tape again after 26+ years.
