SQ Releases

Thought you may be interested in some of the Quadraphonic releases. They're not easy to find.

Thank you. I've got a question, how these 3 albums were converted into stereo: played on stereo turntable or all four tracks were mixed digitally to stereo?

Never mind my previous comments I have done some more reading on the SQ formats.

Vinyl only has 2 tracks. So, a "scheme" was required to encode 4 channels into a 2 channel media. Appropriate decoding equipment was (and still is) required to play the LPs appropriately.

Yes, these .wav files have 2 channels - because they are taken straight off the vinyl. You would hear exactly the same thing playing the vinyl in stereo.

There are many schemes to accomplish this task ... This is also one reason that the Quad 8-track tapes were preferred by some - plenty of tracks available - no need for a scheme.

I've also done reading about this format and now I understand. Thanks again.

Hi friends. If you play these tracks through your system with Dolby Pro Logic II decoding, you will hear "basically" what you would hear if playing the vinyl through a SQ system.

Many times these SQ records were mixed from scratch for the surround sound, so they are often different mixes than the stereo releases.

SQ was basically the same type of matrixed encoding as the original Dolby Surround (unlike other formats such as CD-4 and other quad encoding which were "discreet" more like Dolby AC-3).

If you like this sort of thing, please stop by Stadium Studios and check out such SQ recordings as:
